Early Runs Not Enough to Carry Baseball Over SJBK

PALISADES PARK, NJ - Playing host to a longtime conference rival, the Yeshiva baseball team fell to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, dropping the doubleheader by scores of 22-2 and 25-1 on Sunday, Apr. 7.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw the majority of their production come from Assaf Perl and Judah Troodler, with perl tallying two hits and two RBIs in the first game, while Troodler ran in YU's only score of the second.

Joshua Mintz had a stellar day on the mound for Yeshiva. Over 4.2 innings pitched, Mintz conceded just six hits and six earned runs, all while striking out three of the 29 batters he faced.

With the losses, the Macs are now 0-18, 0-12 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (L, 22-2)
  • The Maccabees got off to a hot start in game number one, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After keeping the Bears scoreless in the top of the inning, Perl smacked a single into right center, scoring both Jesse Rosenblum and Eli Zirdok to put the Macs up 2-0.

  • Yeshiva were able to fight off their opponents in the second, holding SJBK to just one run in the second. However, a shorthanded Macs squad was unable to maintain that level of momentum, seeing the floodgates open in the third.

  • YU conceded three runs in the third inning, 10 runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh.

  • The Macs were not without their chances to put up additional runs. In the sixth inning, after reaching first on an error, Noam Ouanounou risked life and limb to steal second, the first steal of his collegiate career. While Perl would join Ouanounou on base after drawing a walk, both runners would find themselves stranded following an Eli Cohen groundout.

MAC LEADERS
  • Runs: Rosenblum (1), Zirdok (1)
  • Hits: Perl (2), Mintz (1)
  • RBIs: Perl (2)
  • Stolen Bases: Rosenblum (1), Ouanounou (1)
  • Strikeouts: Mintz (3), Ganopolsky (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2 (L, 25-1)
  • Unable to replicate their early offensive explosion from game one, YU did not get on the board until the sixth inning in game two. Proving to be a stellar baserunner, Troodler drew a walk to get on base, reached second on a steal, and then took full advantage of a throwing error by the catcher to make his way to third. Getting a little help from his teammates, the first-year player made his way home thanks to a Zirdok single to center field.

  • Troodlers score would prove insufficient in front of SJBK's production however, as the Macs gave up four runs in the first inning, seven runs in the second, two runs in the fourth, eight runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh.

  • Yeshiva had the chance to score more in the bottom of the seventh, putting men on first and second with no outs. However, three consecutive strikeouts would not only strand the runners, but end the game.

MAC LEADERS
  • Runs: Troodler (1)
  • Hits: Zirdok (1), Shakin (1), Cohen (1)
  • RBI: Zirdok (1)
  • Stolen Bases: Troodler (1)
  • Strikeouts: Zirdok (3), Ganopolsky (1)
