Women’s Tennis Drops “Heartbreaker” to Purchase

QUEENS, NY - Still looking for their first Skyline win of the season, the Yeshiva Women's Tennis Team fell to Purchase College, dropping a close match to the Panthers by a score 4-3 on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Down one of their top contributors due to illness, the Maccabees were forced to step up, elevating players to fill the void.

Despite this setback, Yeshiva rose to the occasion in doubles play, taking two out of the three matches to capture the doubles point.

However, YU could not replicate that same success in singles, losing four of the six matches and falling just short of the win at 4-3.

With the loss, the Macs are now 1-3, 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
  • The Maccabees surged ahead in doubles play, seeing wins out of the pairs of Shira Adler/Gabrielle Resnick (6-4) and Sarah Grunseid/Eliana Tilem (6-1) in the No. 1 and No. 3 seeded matches respectively.

  • The two victories were enough to capture the doubles point, putting the Macs up 1-0 headed into singles play.

Singles:
  • Unfortunately, YU's success would not last into their singles matchups. Yeshiva would only see two more wins, with Anna Laufer (6-3, 6-3) coming out on top in the No. 3 match, and Sarah Grunseid (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) triumphing in a three-set slog in the No. 4 match.

  • The Macs' best chance at a third and decisive victory came in the No. 5 match, when Resnick pushed the contest to a third set after taking the second, 7-6. However, she was outdueled in the final period, falling 6-3.
