BRONXVILLE, NY - Capturing their seventh set win of the season, the Yeshiva Women's Volleyball Team fell to Sarah Lawrence College, losing to the Gryphons by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Offensively, the Maccabees were helmed by
Shany Elmaleh and
Elle Ohayon, with Elmaleh putting up 14 assists and three aces, while Ohayon led the team with six kills.
Elmaleh also had a stellar game on the defensive side of the ball, combining with
Ashley Botnick to keep YU's floors clean, tallying 12 and 16 digs respectively.
With the loss, the Macs are now 2-5, 0-3 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite getting off to a slow start in the first set, falling behind 6-1, YU rallied, closing within one at 6-5. However, a 5-0 Gryphon run allowed for Sarah Lawrence to once again open up their margin. Yeshiva would not be able to get within striking distance again, dropping the period, 25-14.
- Much like the first set, Yeshiva struggled early in the second, seeing the Gryphons jump out to a 9-2 lead. Kills from Talia Finn, Candace Villavicencio and Elmaleh got YU within five at 15-9, yet were not enough to contest Sarah Lawrence's high-powered offense, falling by a score of 25-16.
- While the Macs fell behind 11-4 to kick off the third set, this period would prove different than the previous two. Ignited by a Botnick kill, the Maccabees rallied, leveling the score at 11-all before finally taking the lead at 16-14. Sarah Lawrence fought back, tying the set at 18-18, yet YU would not be denied, riding a pair of Botnick kills and a service ace from Moriah Berkovitch to a 25-22 set win.
- Despite their third set heroics, YU simply did not have the gas left to contend with SLC's dynamic offense come the fourth set. Held to just one kill, the Macs fell, 25-3.
