Women’s Volleyball Drops Tight Battle Versus Maritime

THROGGS NECK, NY - Suffering arguably their closest loss so far this season, the Yeshiva Women's Volleyball Team fell to Maritime College, losing to the Privateers by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Competitive in all three sets, the Maccabees were led offensively by the pair of Elle Ohayon and Shany Elmaleh, as Ohayon led the team with six kills, while Elmaleh put up a stat line of three service aces and nine assists.

Elmaleh also had a monster night on the defensive end, teaming up with Ashley Botnick to scoop 38 digs between them.

With the loss, the Macs are now 2-8, 0-6 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maccabees started off strong in the first set, jumping ahead 5-2 thanks to back-to-back-to-back kills for Botnick, Rachel Ermine and Naomi Harpaz. While Maritime would rally to jump up 8-6, Yeshiva quickly struck back, recapturing their advantage to the tune of 11-8, and then expanding it out to 20-13. This lead would carry Yeshiva all the way to three consecutive set points at 24-21, only for five straight Privateer daggers to close out the set in Maritime's favor, 26-24.

  • Unlike the first, YU started slow in the second set, falling behind, 6-1. Undeterred however, Yeshiva rallied, closing within one on multiple occasions at 6-5 and 9-8 before finally leveling the score at 10-all. This success would prove short-lived though, as the stout Maritime offensive unit rallied to take the period, 25-18.

  • Yeshiva once again jumped out to an early lead in set three, going up by five points before Maritime even had a chance to get on the board. This advantage would persist through the majority of the period, as kills from Botnick, Ohayon, Elmaleh, Harpaz and Candace Villavicencio kept Yeshiva out in front until the Privateers were finally able to reign them in at 22-all. While a service error would briefly hand YU back their advantage at 23-22, all hopes of a set win were snuffed out when three straight Maritime points closed out the period, 25-23.
