Women’s Tennis Topples 2023 Skyline Runner-Up in Win Over SJLI

PATCHOGUE, NY - Competing in their final regular season dual match, the Yeshiva Women's Tennis Team took down St. Joseph's University Long Island, defeating the Golden Eagles by a score of 6-1 on Thursday, Sept. 26.

The Maccabees started out strong, taking two of the three wins in doubles play to take a 1-0 lead headed into singles. Yeshiva continued their excellent play in their singles matches, winning five of six to take that contest, 6-1.

About the result, Coach Miller had to say, "put us right back in the conference playoff hunt. Played our best match under the toughest circumstances, on the road and a must win."

With the win, the Macs close out the season with a 4-4 record, 3-3 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
  • Yeshiva started off doubles play with a pair of perfect wins, as the duos of Sarah Leiderman/Anna Laufer and Sarah Grunseid/Eliana Tilem both took down their foes, 6-0.

  • YU's only loss came in the No. 1 seeded match, when the pair of Shira Adler/Gabrielle Resnick dropped a close bout by a score of 7-5.

  • Despite the loss, the Macs' two wins were enough to secure the doubles point, carrying Yeshiva into singles play up, 1-0.

Singles:
  • The Maccabees continued their reign of terror in singles play, with Adler (7-5, 6-2), Grunseid (6-4, 7[7]-6[4]), Resnick (6-0, 6-2) and Tilem (6-0, 6-0) all taking down their opponents in straight sets.

  • YU's toughest win came in the No. 3 seeded match. Laufer won the second set (6-2) after dropping the first (7-5), ultimately taking the third and decisive period, 10-6.

  • Despite Leiderman surrendering SJLI's one and only point in the No. 2 match by a grueling score of 2-6, 6-0, 7-5, YU came out on top, toppling last year's Skyline runner-ups, 6-1.
