BRONX, NY - Taking on one of the top teams in the conference, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to St. Joseph's University Long Island, losing to the Golden Eagles by a score of 67-46 on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The Maccabees were led in all stages of the game by
Daniella Bessler, with the reigning Skyline Player of the Week tallying a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and 4 assists.
Fortune Hanan yet again proved a force in the paint, putting up a stat line of seven rebounds and two blocks.
With the loss, the Macs are now 2-13, 2-8 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads traded baskets back-and-forth throughout the first quarter. Buckets from Bessler and Shai Rahamim put 12 on the board for the Macs, with YU going into the break trailing, 13-12.
- Yeshiva's offense struggled in the second quarter, managing just four points off of a jumper from Jasmin Maly-Danker and free throws from Naomi Sigman. The Golden Eagles took full advantage of YU's woes, putting up 25 points to bury the Macs in a 38-16 hole at the half.
- While Yeshiva once again started off slow to kick off the second half, scoring just five points over the first five minutes of the third quarter, the back half of the period saw an offensive explosion from the women in blue and white. Back-to-back threes from Rahamim and Maly-Danker catalyzed a 14-6 YU run, with the Macs trailing by just 14 at 49-35 come period close.
- The Macs continued to slice into their deficit at the top of the fourth, getting SJLI's lead down to just 11 points at 51-40. However, that margin would prove the closest Yeshiva would come to their conference foe, with the Golden Eagles reestablishing control of the game over the next nine minutes and closing out the contest, 67-46.
