NEW YORK, NY - Coming out on top in their second-consecutive post-Shabbos game, the Yeshiva Men's Basketball Team took down The College at Old Westbury, defeating the Panthers by a score of 81-62 on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The Maccabees saw another stellar performance out of star guard
Zevi Samet, with the Monsey native leading the team with 29 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Also scoring in double-digits, reigning Skyline Co-Player of the Week
Max Zakheim put up 15 points, while
Yoav Oselka notched 12.
Defensively,
Luke Cronin continued to dominate in the paint, tallying six rebounds and two blocks.
With the win, the Macs improve to 10-7, 7-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads traded baskets through the first eight minutes of play, with the score knotted at 14-14 with 12:00 remaining in the first half.
- While Old Westbury managed to grab hold of a consistent lead throughout the rest of the period, the Maccabee offense continued to match the Panthers nearly bucket for bucket. Points from Samet, Cronin, Oselka, Roy Itcovichi and Effy Freundlich ensured Yeshiva a thin deficit heading into the break, trailing by just two at 34-32 when the buzzer sounded.
- Yeshiva quickly established control of the game come the second half, tying the game at 36-all before seizing a lead they would never relinquish. Back-to-back three-pointers from Samet and Zakheim proved the catalyst for the Macs' ascension, with a 12-2 run rocketing YU's lead out into double digits at 48-38.
- The Maccabee edge only continued to grow throughout the quarter, reaching as many as 19 points at 79-60 with 2:10 remaining in regulation. With the win firmly in hand, the Yeshiva bench was sent out for some valuable playing time, wrapping up the contest, 81-62.
