Monster Game From Bessler Not Enough to Lift Women’s Basketball Over UMSV

NEW YORK, NY - Closing out the month of January, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, losing to the Dolphins by a score of 84-56 on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Showing why she is the newest member of the Maccabee 1,000-point club, Daniella Bessler put the team on her back, leading her squad with a season-high statline of 29 points, four rebounds, four steals and one assist.

Also having a stellar game on the defensive side of the ball, Tali Cohen put up a respectable three steals and a block on the night.

With the loss, the Macs fall to 2-15, 2-10 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both squads traded baskets over the first three and a half minutes of play, seeing the score knotted at 6-6 with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. However, from there, UMSV was able to secure some breathing room, outscoring YU by a margin of 16-6 and putting the Macs in a 22-12 hole by the end of the quarter.

  • Despite being down double digits, Yeshiva continued to push in the second quarter, with buckets from Bessler, Cohen and Fortune Hanan getting the Macs within one point at 26-25 with 3:29 left in the period. However, the women in blue and white could not finish the job and take the lead for themselves, going into the half down, 36-29.

  • Despite an early surge that saw the Macs within four in the opening minutes of the second half, UMSV once again reestablished their hold on the game, growing their lead back out into double digits. YU's offense managed a respectable 14 points over the 10 minutes of play, but the defensive unit could not match that production, seeing the Macs head into the final quarter trailing by a score of 58-43.

  • Yeshiva's offense continued to operate well throughout the fourth, as the shooting of Bessler, Hanan, Cohen and Sara Yolkut tallied 13 points. However, the Macs could simply not catch the inexorable Dolphin attack, conceding 26 points on the period, and ultimately dropping the game, 85-56.
