Women’s Basketball Falls to Mount Saint Mary in Home Opener

NEW YORK, NY - Playing at home for the first time this season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to Mount Saint Mary College, losing to the Knights by a score of 88-45 on Wednesday, Nov. 19th.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw three players score in double digits. Rookie Ilana Schwartz led the way with 16, while Simone Amkraut and Naomi Sigman tallied 11 and 10 respectively.

On top of her offensive prowess, Sigman also dominated the glass for the Macs, completing her double-double with 13 rebounds on the night.

With the result, YU is now 0-2, 0-1 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Yeshiva fell behind early in the first quarter, trailing 11-0 just over five minutes into the period. A jumper from Amkraut finally got the Macs on the board with 4:13 remaining, a bucket that sparked a Maccabee run. Baskets from Fortune Hanan, Sigman, and Schwartz pushed YU's point total into the double digits, with the Macs trailing 20-11 at the horn.

  • YU continued to press at the start of the second quarter, cutting their deficit back into the single digits at 22-13 off another Amkraut score. However, this effort was not enough to match Mount Saint Mary's output, with the margin between the two squads stretching out to 14 at 34-20 by halftime.

  • The Macs struggled out of the break, managing just two points through the first nine minutes of the third quarter. While three back-to-back layups in the final minute from Schwartz and Hanan managed to boost YU's point total for the period into double digits, MSMC still took full advantage of YU's offensive woes, exploding their lead past 30 points at 61-30.

  • The Maccabees had their most successful offensive quarter in the fourth, putting up 15 points behind buckets from Schwartz, Sigman, and Amkruat. However, YU's sharpshooting could not overcome Mount Saint Mary's lead, with the Macs ultimately falling by a score of 88-45.
