Women’s Basketball Loses Early Lead, Falls to Sarah Lawrence at Home

NEW YORK, NY - Playing at home for the first and on;y time this December, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to Sarah Lawrence College, losing to the Gryphons by a score of 84-58 on Tuesday, Dec. 9th.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw three players score in double digits. Naomi Sigman led the way with 15, while Ilana Schwartz and Tali Cohen put up 12 and 10 respectively.

On the defensive side of the ball, Fortune Hanan dominated the paint for YU, recording a statline of nine rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

With the result, the Macs are now 1-7, 0-4 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Yeshiva's offense came out stagnant early in the first quarter, not managing a basket through their first three and a half minutes of play. Sarah Lawrence took full advantage of YU's struggles, going up 9-0. However, with 6:39 remaining, Cohen nailed a deep three to put the Maccabees on the board, a shot that kicked the YU attack into high gear. Buckets from Cohen and Simone Amkraut sliced away at Sarah Lawrence's lead, cutting it down to just 14-13 with 3:03 remaining. Cohen then capped the run with one last jumper, officially swinging the pendulum in YU's favor at 15-14. Yeshiva's edge would only grow through the rest of the period, with the Macs closing out the quarter up, 23-19.

  • The Macs carried their first quarter momentum into the second, growing their advantage out to seven points at 34-27 through the first five minutes. However, their edge would not last. The Gryphons fought back, tying the game at 34-all, before taking the lead back at 35-34. Unable to recover, Yeshiva went into the half down, 37-34.

  • Both teams went basket-for-basket to start the third quarter, but after four minutes of keeping serve, the Macs finally broke. The Gryphons pushed their lead into the double digits at 49-39 with 6:18 remaining, and would not surrender that margin for the rest of the game. The Maccabees continued to fight, seeing buckets from Schwartz, Sigman, and Hanan, but the effort was not enough to keep pace with Sarah Lawrence's attack, with the Macs trailing by a score of 64-49 by the time the period ended.

  • YU's deficit only increased in the final quarter. Yeshiva scored nine points to Sarah Lawrence's 20, ultimately falling, 84-58.
