Men’s Volleyball Drops First Match of March at Purchase

PURCHASE, NY - The Macs have opened their March schedule, taking on their third conference opponent of the season. The Yeshiva University Men's Volleyball team traveled to Purchase to face the Purchase College Panthers, but fell 3-0 on Monday, March 3rd.

Jonathan Werta and Massimo Bertini led the Macs, each notching four kills on the night. Adding to the offensive efforts was setter Amiti Trablesi, who had 12 assists.

Yoni Rubin and Zanvy Lesnoy anchored the backcourt, combining for eight digs, while Osen Peter and Menachem Solomon teamed up for a key double block on the night.

With the loss, the Macs are now 1-10, 0-3 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Macs opened the first set with strong energy, as Bertini put Yeshiva on the board with a kill off an assist from Trabelsi. However, Purchase quickly took control, stringing together a dominant run behind a series of service aces and kills, pushing ahead 7-1. Looking to shift the momentum, Yeshiva called a timeout, but the Panthers continued to extend their lead to 14-2. Yeshiva fought hard, but Purchase remained in command. With the Panthers at set point, Frohlich delivered a kill to hold them off momentarily, but a final strike by the Panthers sealed the set for Purchase, as the Macs fell 25-5 in the opener.

  • Similar to the first set, the second set began with Bertini getting on the board early for the Macs with a kill off an assist from Amiti Trabelsi. But a determined Purchase team responded quickly, establishing an early lead with strong offensive play. A kill from Werta off an assist from Rubin helped Yeshiva stay within striking distance at 9-4. The Panthers would maintain control, pushing their lead to 18-6. A few Purchase attack errors gave Yeshiva a brief spark, but the Panthers remained dominant, closing out the second set 25-6.

  • Yeshiva came out with renewed energy in the third set, jumping to a 2-0 lead after an early kill from Bertini and a Purchase service error. Purchase quickly responded, and a Bertini kill soon knotted the score at 3-3. The teams traded points in the early stages, with Yeshiva staying competitive behind key kills from Werta and Osen, battling to ties at 10-10 and 13-13. However, Purchase found their rhythm, going on a decisive run to break the deadlock and extend their lead to 20-14. Yeshiva fought back, narrowing the gap with a Lesnoy kill and strong defensive play to pull within four. Despite the Macs' resilience, Purchase capitalized on attack errors and service miscues down the stretch, closing out the set 25-18 to complete the sweep.
