QUEENS, NY - Taking on their penultimate opponent of the regular season, the Yeshiva Women's Tennis Team felled Sarah Lawrence College, beating the Gryphons by a score of 4-3 on Thursday, Sept. 18th.
On top of being an exciting contest, the match held extra significance, serving as Senior Night for the Maccabees. Before first serve, the Macs honored their three graduating seniors,
Micka Mimoun,
Anna Laufer, and
Leila Bakhshi.
The Macs started slow in doubles, dropping two of three matches and carrying a 1-0 deficit into singles. However, Yeshiva rallied in singles play, picking up four points to best their conference foe, 4-3, completing the thrilling comeback.

Anna Laufer, who has been the heart of the team, and rookie
Rina Pollock, who played like a veteran at the most crucial time."
With the win, the Maccabees improve to 4-3, 3-3 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- Yeshiva struggled early on, as the duos of Rina Pollock/Gabrielle Resnick and Sarah Grunseid/Eliana Tilem both fell by a score of 6-4.
- The Macs picked up one doubles win in the No. 2 seeded match, with the pair of Sarah Schewitz/Laufer notching a 6-2 victory.
- Despite the late success, the two earlier losses meant that the Maccabees trailed 1-0 going into singles, needing to win at least four of six matches to take the victory.
Singles:
- Early on, the Macs' fate looked sealed, as Resnick (6-4, 6-0) and Grunseid (6-0, 6-4) fell in straight sets in the No. 3 and No. 5 matches respectively.
- However, it was then that YU began to catch fire. Yeshiva claimed straight set wins of their own in the No. 4 and No. 6 matches, as Schewitz (6-4, 6-1) and Tilem (6-2, 6-3) triumphed over their conference counterparts.
- Building on that spark, Laufer made the most of her senior night. The New York native put on an exhilarating display for her family in the stands, winning a back and forth No. 2 match, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
- Tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to the No. 1 match, where the rookie Pollock battled Sarah Lawrence's Neomi Spellman. The athletes split the first two sets, as Spellman took the first, 6-4, and Pollock the second, 6-2. In the third and decisive set, Pollock leapt out to an early advantage, breaking Spellman on multiple occasions to claim a 5-2 lead. Spellman did not roll over however, surging to tie the contest at 5-5. Intent to secure victory for not only herself, but for her team, Pollock dug in, taking the next two games in dramatic fashion to secure the 7-5 set win.
- Overcome by the thrilling victory, the Maccabees stormed the court and mobbed their first year player, ecstatic at what she had just accomplished for the team.
