JAMAICA, NY - Taking on a longtime crosstown rival, the Yeshiva Women's Volleyball Team dominated York College, downing the Cardinals by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 2nd.
Offensively, the Maccabees were helmed by the duo of
Candace Villavicencio and
Shany Elmaleh. Villavicencio led the team in kills with seven, while Elmaleh proved a jack of all trades, notching an impressive stat line of 12 assists, five aces and three kills.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Elle Ohayon and
Eden Fitoussi led the way, with Ohayon tallying nine digs, while Fitoussi notched the first block of her young Mac career.
With the win, the Macs improve to 1-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Macs raced out to a big early lead in set one, with kills from Ohayon and Villavicencio powering YU to a 17-5 advantage. While York managed to break into double digits, attack and service errors from the Cardinals, punctuated by one final kill from rookie Leya Dennen, sealed a 25-15 set win for Yeshiva.|
- Yeshiva continued their dominant ways in the second set, powering to an 11-3 advantage behind a pair of service aces by Elmaleh. Two back-to-back kills from York shrank YU's edge to six at 11-5, yet this brief setback only served to set up a stretch of play that truly established the Macs' hold on the contest. 10 straight points catapulted the Maccabees out to a 21-5 lead, with consecutive kills from Villavicencio being complimented by scores from Sasha Aaron and Noa Benhamo. York would attempt a brief comeback over the next half dozen serves, yet the Maccabee mountain proved too tall to climb, with Yeshiva taking the set, 25-13.
- For the third consecutive period, YU quickly established a dominant hold on the contest, leaping out to a 12-5 lead. York proved resilient, keeping pace with the Macs with scorelines of 15-9 and 17-11. However, Yeshiva's offense was too potent to match, as two Elmaleh kills in five serves closed out the set, 25-16.
