Men’s Soccer Draws Mount Saint Mary in Home Opener

NORTH ARLINGTON, NJ - Playing as the home team for the first time this season, the Yeshiva Men's Soccer Team tied with Mount Saint Mary College, drawing even with the Knights at a score of 1-1 on Sunday, Sept. 7th.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by the duo of Franco Busso and Hadar Lavinsky, with Busso serving up the assist that led to Lavinsky's goal, YU's only score of the contest.

On the defensive side of the ball, Yeshiva saw a stellar performance out of Ilan Ganem. The longtime defender made his debut in goal, facing down 11 shots and notching two saves.

With the result, the Macs are now 0-3-1, 0-1-1 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite early pressure from YU, which included six Maccabee shots, both squads were held scoreless through the first half hour of play.

  • Finally, in the 34th minute, the Macs broke through. Busso flipped a beautiful pass to Lavinsky, placing it just out of reach of the defender. Then, seeing the keeper advance, Lavinsky chipped the ball high over the goaltender's head, sending it bouncing into the upper corner to put YU up, 1-0.

  • However, Yeshiva's lead would not last long. Just four minutes later, Mount Saint Mary equalized, forcing a 1-1 scoreline that would last into the break.

  • The Macs continued to push throughout the second half, playing the majority of the 45 minutes up a man thanks to an early second yellow by an MSM striker.

  • YU's efforts would not find paydirt however, seeing the score stuck at 1-all through the end of regulation. The Macs' best chance to put up a second goal came in the final minute of play, when Busso snuck the ball past the keeper, only to see it cleared away by a defender just as it was about to roll over the line.
