Women’s Basketball Opens Road Stretch With Loss at SJBK

BROOKLYN, NY - Playing the first of five consecutive road games, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, losing to the Bears by a score of 77-60 on Tuesday, Jan. 13th.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw three players score in double digits. Naomi Sigman led the way with 28, while Fortune Hanan and Simone Amkraut posted 15 and 10 respectively.

On top of her scoring prowess, Hanan also locked down the defensive side of the ball for YU, completing her double-double with 13 rebounds, while also swatting four blocks on the night.

With the result, the Macs are now 1-13, 0-9 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite stellar shooting from Hanan and Sigman, the Macs fell behind early, trailing by eight at 17-9 halfway through the first quarter. Yeshiva managed just one more basket, headed into the break down double digits at 21-11.

  • Yeshiva's deficit grew through the first half of the second quarter, with the women in blue and white finding themselves down by 13 at 30-17. However, catalyzed by two back-to-back Sigman triples, Yeshiva began slashing away at SJBK's advantage, drawing within three at 32-29 come the end of the half.

  • Both teams traded baskets through the majority of the third quarter, with the Maccabees not allowing the Bears more than a seven-point advantage through the first nine minutes. However, in the final 53 seconds, SJBK went on a 5-2 run, putting the Macs down by 10 at 57-47 going into the final period.

  • Yeshiva had a stellar fourth quarter, scoring 13 points on shots from Hanan, Amkraut, and Tali Cohen. However, the effort was not enough to overtake SJBK's hold on the game, with the Bears tallying 20 points and never seeing their lead dip back into the single digits. When the final buzzer sounded, the Macs left Brooklyn with a 77-60 loss.
