Men’s Basketball Rolls SJLI For 10th Straight Conference Win

PATCHOGUE, NY - Kicking their unbeaten conference streak into the double digits, the Yeshiva Men's Basketball Team took down St. Joseph's University Long Island, beating the Golden Eagles by a score of 76-47 on Wednesday, Jan. 28th.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw a jaw-dropping performance out of reigning Skyline Player of the Year Zevi Samet, with the senior guard dropping 35 points on 15-22 shooting, including 4-8 from three.

Also putting up impressive statlines, Max Zakheim notched 10 points, while Yair Dovrat pulled down 11 rebounds on the night.

With the result, the Macs are now 11-8, 10-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SJLI managed to keep the game close through the first five minutes, drawing within one point at 13-12. However, catalyzed by a tough Samet layup, Yeshiva quickly took control. A 24-4 run skyrocketed YU's lead out to 37-16 over the next 10 minutes of play, putting the Macs ahead in dominant fashion and silencing the home crowd. With 22 points from Samet alone, the men in blue and white went into halftime up by 19, leaving a 41-22 scoreline plastered on the SJLI scoreboard throughout the break.

  • YU's advantage continued to grow throughout the second half, reaching 29 points five minutes in at 56-27, before maxing out at 31 at 76-45 with just 1:17 remaining. The Maccabees never led by fewer than 21 points throughout the latter 20 minutes of the contest, handing a playoff-contending Golden Eagle squad their biggest DIII loss of the season att 76-47.

  • Yeshiva dominated the game in nearly every statistical category, but none more so than the ability to score in the paint. The Maccabees tallied 44 paint points to SJLI's 16, a quality to their attack that helped YU shoot 49% from the field while holding the Golden Eagles to just 25%.
