Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Samet Sets New Single Game Scoring Record as Men’s Basketball Drops Triple Digits on USMMA

NEW YORK, NY - In another historic evening for the Maccabees, Yeshiva Men's Basketball beat the United States Merchant Marine Academy, dominating the Mariners by a score of 110-72 on Saturday, Jan. 31st.

With a performance already emblazoned into the very hardwood of the Max Stern Athletic Center, Zevi Samet had a truly special night. Over just 29 minutes of play, the Monsey Mamba tallied 52 points, setting a new single-game scoring record and dethroning Ryan Turrel's mark of 51 set back in November of 2021. Samet proved nearly unstoppable with the ball in his hands, shooting 18-26, including 10-15 from beyond the arc.

Two other Maccabees also excelled on the offensive side of the ball, with Yoav Oselka tallying 20 points, and Max Zakheim notching 12.

With the result, the Macs improve to 12-8, 11-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maccabees leapt out to an early lead, going up by 11 at 15-4 through just three minutes of gametime. While USMMA fought back, clawing their way to a 21-19 advantage, YU's deficit proved short lived. Thanks to nine straight points from Samet, the Macs quickly regained control, taking just five minutes to once again lead by double digits at 36-26.

  • YU's edge only grew through the rest of the half. Leaning on strong shooting from Zakheim, Samet, and Oselka, Yeshiva went into the break sporting a comfortable 54-32 cushion.

  • Not lifting the gas pedal off the floor, the Maccabees refused to let up, ballooning their advantage throughout the second half. The Macs led by 30 at 12:15, 40 at 10:10, and 50 at 8:24, truly cementing the conference contest as a blowout.

  • The basket that gave YU their 50-point lead carried extra weight, as the triple proved Samet's 50th, 51st, and 52nd points. After receiving a bounce pass from Alex Kirievsky near the top left corner of the key, Zevi pulled up from deep despite two defenders in his face, catching nothing but net on his record-breaking shot.

  • With the game well in hand, the Maccabee bench received valuable minutes, closing out the 110-72 win for YU.
