Women’s Basketball Falls to Old Westbury Despite Sigman Double-Double

NEW YORK, NY - Playing at home for the final time in January, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team has fallen to The College at Old Westbury, losing to the Panthers by a score of 65-56.

The Maccabees were led on both sides of the ball by Naomi Sigman, with the junior forward tallying a jaw-dropping statline of 25 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.

With the result, the Macs are now 1-12, 0-8 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of play, seeing the score tied at 10-all with 4:54 remaining. From there, the Macs were able to secure some breathing room, leaning on shots from Sigman, Simone Amkraut, and Eliana Leitner to carry a 17-12 lead into the break.

  • Yeshiva's lead held firm throughout the second quarter, with YU's advantage reaching as many as seven points at 29-22. While an 8-3 Old Westbury run over the final five minutes brought the Panthers within striking distance, the Macs' defense held firm, maintaining Yeshiva edge into the half at 32-30.

  • YU's lead held through the first seven minutes of the third quarter, surviving two draws at 32-all and 34-all. However, come the third at 40-40, it was the Panthers that seized the advantage, going up 42-40 on a layup in the paint. This margin would hold through the rest of the period, with the Macs down two at 47-45 when the final buzzer sounded.

  • The Maccabee offense struggled through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, not scoring on any of their five shots. Old Westbury took full advantage of YU's drought, launching their lead into the double digits at 55-45. While five straight points off a Sigman triple and a Jasmin Maly-Danker jumper slashed Yeshiva's deficit down to five with 4:44 remaining, that would be as close as the Macs would get to retaking the game. The Macs could not contend with Old Westbury's dominant paint offense, ultimately dropping the game, 65-56.
