NEW YORK, NY - Reaching five sets against a CUNYAC foe for the second time this season, the Yeshiva Men's Volleyball Team fell to The City College of New York, losing to the Beavers by a score of three sets to two.
Offensively the Maccabees were led by the dynamic duo of
Mateusz Karpow and
Eli Waxman, with Waxman serving up 36 assists, while Karpow hammered down a new personal-best 21 kills.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Yoni Rubin patrolled the floor for YU, scooping up 17 digs on the night.
With the result, the Macs are now 0-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite early surges, the Maccabees fell behind quickly in set number one, trailing by 5-1 and then 14-10 through the first two dozen serves. While the Macs managed to close within three points on three separate occasions, seeing the scoreboard read 16-13, 19-16, and 20-17, the effort was not enough to usurp CCNY's hold on the period, as Yeshiva fell, 25-19.
- Unlike the first set, the second proved a much closer affair, with the lead changing hands four times before settling at 9-7 in CCNY's favor. From there, the Beavers were uncatchable, as despite kills from Karpow, Sean Felderman, and Peter Osen, the Maccabees could not come closer than three points at 21-18. Four straight kills got CCNY to 25, ending the period 25-18 in the Beavers' favor.
- Despite their two-set deficit, Yeshiva refused to give up the fight. Starting the third set out strong, the Macs jumped out to an early lead, going up 11-5 off a pair of kills from Karpow. This advantage would be tested, with the Beavers closing in at 16-14, yet YU held firm. Two different 4-0 runs secured the men in blue and white a dominant 24-15 edge, with a final CCNY ball-handling error locking up YU's set win, 25-16.
- Yeshiva continued to roll in the fourth set, once again gaining early ground off the powerful right hand of Karpow. Up 12-5 through the first 17 serves, Yeshiva barely gave the Beavers the chance to breathe, racing ahead to an 18-10 margin. Proving their skills as a team though, CCNY fought back, riding a 5-0 stretch to close within three at 18-15. Regardless, once again leaning on their Polish rightside hitter, the Macs quickly dealt with the threat, closing out the period, 25-21, and tying the match, 2-2.
- The fifth and final set proved a back-and-forth affair, with the score knotting up eight times before finally settling at 9-all. However, The Macs simply could not finish the job. Four straight points from CCNY put YU in a 13-9 hole, and while a pair of kills from Karpow and Alex Kirievsky got Yeshiva back within two at 14-12, one final kill gave the Beavers the 15-12 set win, and the 3-2 match win.
