Men’s Volleyball Closes February by Taking a Set Off SJBK

NEW YORK, NY - Taking the court for the final time in February, the Yeshiva Men's Volleyball Team fell to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, losing to the Bears by a score of 3-1 on Thursday, Feb. 26th.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by the duo of Mateusz Karpow and Eli Waxman, with Waxman serving up 12 assists and Karpow knocking down 13 kills.

Karpow also had a monster night on the defensive side of the ball, tying the all-time Yeshiva single-game record with seven blocks.

With the result, the Macs are now 0-7, 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Macs fell behind early in set one, trailing by a score of 16-6 through the first 22 serves. Yeshiva rallied, with kills from Karpow, Peter Osen, and Gabe Simon-Hakalir slashing the gap between the two squads down to just one at 18-17. However the comeback attempt fell short, as SJBK closed out the period with a 7-1 run, downing YU, 25-18.

  • Yeshiva struggled in the second set. The Macs only managed 11 points on three kills, dropping the period, 25-11.

  • Unlike the previous two, the third set proved a much closer affair, with the lead changing hands seven times before finally settling at 16-16. The Maccabees managed to secure some breathing room, winning the next four points, but the Bears fought back, tying the game up once again at 24-all. Used to high-pressure situations, the coolheaded Macs proceeded to stave off three different match points, ultimately taking the set 30-28 on a 3-0 run made up of a Karpow kill and pair of SJBK attack errors.

  • Despite their impressive third set, the Maccabees could not carry that momentum into the fourth. Yeshiva quickly fell behind, trailing 20-8 through the first 28 serves. A 10-3 run managed to get YU within five at 23-18, but the effort was not enough to usurp the Bears' hold on the set. Two final SJBK kills handed YU a 25-18 period loss, and a 3-1 match loss.
