Strong First Half Not Enough to Power Women’s Basketball Over Manhattanville

NEW YORK, NY - Hosting the top ranked team in the conference, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to Manhattanville University, losing to the Valiants by a score of 67-49 on Wednesday, Feb. 4th.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by the pair of Naomi Sigman and Ilana Schwartz. Sigman accounted for nearly half the team's offense with 24 points, while Schwartz also scored in double digits with 16.

On the defensive side of the ball, Fortune Hanan had another impressive night, adding three blocks and pushing her season total out to 36.

With the result, the Macs are now 1-19, 0-15 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite Manhattanville sitting atop the Skyline standings with a perfect 15-0 record, the Maccabees held their own, especially in the first half.

  • A slow start saw YU held scoreless through the first seven minutes of play, yet the Macs rallied, scoring the final six points of the first quarter and cutting their deficit to eight at 14-6.

  • Yeshiva continued to excel on both sides of the ball throughout the second quarter. Matching the Valiants blow for blow, YU held the margin between the two squads firm, going into the half still down by just eight at 28-20.

  • It was in the third quarter that Manhattanville began to pull away. While the Maccabees had their most successful offensive period of the game, scoring 16 points behind the shooting of Sigman, Schwartz, Hanan, and Simone Amkraut, YU could not fully contain their conference foe's potent attack, seeing the Valiants put up 23 points for a 51-36 lead.

  • Despite their deficit, the Macs never let their foot off the gas, continuing to push even as the final seconds of the fourth quarter ticked away. Unfortunately, their effort was not enough to unseat the top team in the conference, ultimately falling by a score of 67-49.
