Women’s Basketball Staves Off Old Westbury Comeback for First Conference Win

OLD WESTBURY, NY - Taking down a Skyline opponent for the first time this season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team beat The College at Old Westbury, defeating the Panthers by a score of 59-58 on Sunday, Feb. 8th.

The Maccabees were led on both sides of the ball by the duo of Naomi Sigman and Fortune Hanan. Each tallied double-doubles, with Sigman notching 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Hanan posted a stifling statline of 12 rebounds, 11 points, seven blocks, two steals, and one assist.

With the result, the Macs are now 2-19, 1-15 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Yeshiva came out of the gate hot in the first quarter, quickly pushing their lead out into the double digits at 15-5 behind strong scoring from Sigman, Hanan, Tali Cohen, and Jasmin Maly-Danker. While Old Westbury fought back, the Macs still carried a comfortable 17-9 cushion into the break.

  • The second quarter proved a scoring bonanza, with a combined 33 points being put up between the two squads. However, YU's advantage held firm, with the women in blue and white leading 33-26 at the half.

  • Yeshiva's lead reached its largest point in the third quarter, stretching out to 13 points at 44-31 with 3:37 remaining. By the time the buzzer sounded to mark the end of the period, YU led, 46-37.

  • The Maccabees' lead held firm through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, up by 10 at 52-42 with 5:26 left on the clock. However, it was then the Old Westbury began to push. A 9-0 Panther run shrank YU's margin down to just one at 52-51, before an Old Westbury free throw tied the game at 57-all with just under 90 seconds left in regulation. A second free throw gave the Panthers their first lead of the game at 58-57, but that edge would not last. With 1:01 remaining, Cohen stole the ball and nailed a fast break jumper in the paint, putting the Macs up, 59-58. Two missed Old Westbury threes proved the final gasps of YU's conference foe, with the Macs walking out of the Clark Athletic Center with a 59-58 victory.
