Men’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Marathon to York

NEW YORK, NY - Seeing a match go to five sets for the first time since March of 2024, the Yeshiva Men's Volleyball Team fell to York College, losing to the Cardinals by a score of 3-2 on Thursday, Mar. 5th.

The Maccabees were led on both sides of the ball by Mateusz Karpow, with the 6-9 junior putting up an impressive statline of 16 kills, 12 digs, five service aces, and one block.

With the result, the Macs are now 0-2 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Yeshiva fell behind early in the first set, trailing 15-7 through the first 22 serves. However, it was then that the Maccabees began their counterpush. Powered almost exclusively by Karpow, Yeshiva stormed back, outscoring their opponent by a margin of 13-6 to narrow their deficit to just one at 21-20. Unfortunately, the effort would prove not enough, with the Macs only managing one more point before falling, 25-21.

  • Unlike the first set, the second proved a much closer contest, with the two teams tied at 8-all through 16 serves. This deadlock would persist, with the score knotting up five more times before reaching 15-all. From there, the Maccabees were able to pull away, making the most of a series of York errors to go on a 10-2 run and take the set, 25-17.

  • Much like the second set, the third saw the squads locked in a dead heat, tied at 10-all through 20 serves. This margin persisted through the next 22 points, seeing the scoreboard read 21-21. York finally managed to break away, securing two set points at 24-22. However, the Macs rallied, leaning on a kill from Massimo Bertini and three Cardinal errors to win the set, 26-24, going up 2-1 in the match overall.

  • The fourth set saw the Macs jump out to an early lead, up 9-4 thanks to a service ace and kill from Karpow. However, this edge would not last, with York tying the game at 15 before going up permanently at 18-17. YU would be unable to regain their advantage, surrendering the period by a score of 25-22.

  • Yeshiva raced out to an early lead in the fifth and final set, up 8-2 thanks to excellent serving from Karpow. However, the Macs would struggle to maintain that edge. The Cardinals outscored YU 7-1 to level the field at 9-9, a deadlock that extended to 12-12, and then 13-13. Unfortunately for Yeshiva, it was York who secured the final two points, winning the set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.
