NEW YORK, NY - Taking the diamond for one last time before Passover break, the Yeshiva Baseball Team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, losing a doubleheader to the Mariners by scores of 10-5 and 14-4 on Friday, Mar. 27th.
Â
The Maccabees were led by
Jake Arnow, with the second-year phenom recording four hits, three runs, and three RBIs on the day, a statline that included two back-to-back home runs, as well as an intentional walk.
Â
With the result, the Macs are now 0-16, 0-8 in conference play.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (L, 10-5)
- The Maccabees exploded out of the gate in game one, erasing a 1-0 lead USMMA had notched in the top of the first with two runs of their own. The runs started coming with an Arnow bomb over the left field fence, drawing the score even at 1-1, growing out to 2-1 when Rueben Benzaquen was brought home by a Gavriel Weinstein single.
Â
- Yeshiva continued to pile on points in the bottom of the second, once again off the barrel of Arnow's bat. With Simmy Goldberger sitting on second, Arnow once again went yard on the very first pitch, putting the Macs up 4-1.
Â
- Unfortunately, from there the Maccabee bats would cool, while USMMA tallied five runs in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
Â
- YU did manage one more score in the bottom of the seventh when Benzaquen came around again, this time on an Izzy Gober single, but the effort was not enough to make a comeback, as the Macs fell, 10-5.

Â
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2 (L, 14-4)
- The second game proved low scoring through the first two innings, with the line tied at 1-1. YU's run came in the bottom of the second, when excellent baserunning from Noah Steinemtz and Jacob Shakin combined to outsmart the USMMA shortstop and bring Steinmetz home.
Â
- While the Mariners captured a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, scores from Arnow and Goldberger in the bottom of the inning swung the pendulum in YU's favor, as the Macs opened the fourth with a 3-2 advantage.
Â
- The fourth inning would see the game once again deadlock. USMMA scored twice in the top, with YU putting up one run in the bottom, sending the contest into the fifth at 4-all.
Â
- Unfortunately, the Maccabees could not keep pace with their conference foe through the latter three innings. USMMA went on to score two runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, and three in the seventh, downing the Macs, 14-4.
