Baseball Splits Doubleheader With SJBK, Earns First Conference Win on Senior Day

TEANECK, NJ - Beating a conference opponent for the first time not just this season, but since 2012, the Yeshiva Baseball Team split a doubleheader with St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, taking game one by a score of 11-10, before falling to the Bears in game two 21-6 on Sunday, Apr. 19th.

Before the game, the Maccabees took a moment to honor their graduating seniors, thanking Eli Zirdok, Jacob Shakin, Noam Ouanounou, Zach Magerman, Assaf Perl, Zach Goldberg, and Jacob Canner for their years of commitment and excellent play.

In game one, the Maccabees saw special performances out of Simmy Goldberger and Shakin, with Goldberger tallying two hits, two RBIs, and a run, while Shakin put up a statline of two hits, two runs, and an RBI. In game two, Reuben Benzaquen led the way, notching one hit, one run, and three RBIs.

With the result, the Macs are now 2-20, 1-11 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (W, 11-10)
  • SJBK drew first blood, scoring twice in the top of the first to race out to a 2-0 lead. The Maccabees one-upped their conference foe in the bottom of the inning, tallying three runs of their own when Goldberger, Benzaquen, and Jake Arnow all rounded the bases, putting YU up, 3-2.

  • Yeshiva continued to roll in the second, holding the Bear scoreless in the top of the inning and adding to their own line in the bottom, with Arnow and Benzaquen coming home once again to jack up the Macs' lead to three at 5-2.

  • However, YU's margin would not hold. While the Maccabee bats went silent, the Bears came to life through the next three innings, scoring three times in third, twice in the fourth, and twice in the fifth, burying the home team in a 9-5 hole.

  • The Macs finally found their rhythm again in the bottom of the fifth. Shakin scored on a Lior Bongart sacrifice fly, before Assaf Perl singled to left field, driving in both Canner and RJ Hellman, narrowing YU's deficit to one at 9-8.

  • St. Joseph's edge grew back out in the sixth, with the Bears tallying one run of their own before holding the Macs scoreless, sending the game into the final inning at a scoreline of 10-8.

  • Chaim Stark came up clutch for YU in the top of the seventh, holding the Bears in check with just one baserunner. Having done his job, the sophomore pitcher could only sit and watch as his offense stepped up to close the gap.

  • The inning started strong. Shakin led off with a single to right field, advancing to second when Canner drew a walk on four pitches. While Hellman struck out for YU's first out, Izzy Gober made the most of his pinch hitting opportunity on the very next at-bat, drawing a walk on a full count to load the bases. Assaf Perl then reached on a catcher's interference, driving in Shakin to narrow YU's deficit to 10-9. Goldberger then stepped up to the plate. Down one, bases loaded, one out, the Atlanta native squared up and swung. Single, right down the middle, Gavriel Weinstein (who had come in to pinch run for Gober), and Canner both streaking towards home plate. The throw - not in time. Yeshiva 11, SJBK 10, game over. The Maccabees go ballistic.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2 (L, 21-6)
  • Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead in game two, with the Macs up 3-0 after one behind scores from Goldberger, Arnow, and Benzaquen.

  • Unfortunately, the margin would not last. SJBK's bats exploded in the second inning and refused to let up, with the Bears tallying nine runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and five in the sixth.

  • The Maccabees managed to score three more times, with Bongart and Perl finding their way home in the fourth and Weinstein rounding the bases in the fifth. However, the effort was not enough to overcome Yeshiva's deficit, as the Macs fell, 21-6.
