NEWBURGH, NY - Hitting the road for the penultimate time this season, the Yeshiva Baseball Team fell to Mount Saint Mary College, dropping a doubleheader to the Knights by scores of 9-8 and 28-9 on Tuesday, Apr. 28th.
Â
In game one, the Maccabees were led by
Gavriel Weinstein, as the catcher proved his mettle in the batter's box with two hits and three RBIs. In game two, Yeshiva was helmed by the duo of
Jake Arnow and
Noah Steinmetz, with Arnow recording three hits and two runs, while Steinmetz put up a stat line of three hits, three RBIs, and a run.
Â
With the result, the Maccabees are now 2-24, 1-15 in conference play.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (L, 9-8)
- After both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, the Maccabees drew first blood in the top of the second. After forcing a walk and advancing to third on a Weinstein double, Jacob Canner was brought in by a Lior Bongart sacrifice fly, giving YU a 1-0 lead.
Â
- Mount Saint Mary responded in the bottom of the inning, putting up four runs and shunting YU into a three-run hole at 4-1. The Knights then expanded their lead in the third, growing it out to 5-1.
Â
- Despite their deficit, the Maccabees stood undeterred. Yeshiva began their comeback in the top of the fourth, cutting the gap between the two teams down to three at 5-2 when Jacob Shakin scored on an error by the Mount Saint Mary right fielder.
Â
- This effort reached a fever pitch in the seventh. Behind runs from Arnow, Shakin, Reuben Benzaquen, and Gavi Ness, the Maccabees not only erased their deficit, but seized back the lead, up 6-5 with just the bottom half of the inning remaining. However, the Knights went on to tie the game at 6-all, necessitating extra innings.
Â
- Yeshiva made the most of their chances in the top of the eighth, sending both Izzy Gober and Simmy Goldberger around the bases to take an 8-6 advantage. Unfortunately, that edge would not hold, with the Knights putting up three runs in the bottom of the inning, and closing out the game with a 9-8 Maccabee loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2 (L, 28-9)
- The Maccabees jumped out to a big lead to start game two, tallying five runs in the top of the first behind scores from Goldberger, Arnow, Benzaquen, Shakin, and Weinstein.
Â
- While Mount Saint Mary put up three scores of their own in the bottom of the inning, YU stood undeterred, stretching their run total out to six in the top of the second.
Â
- However, despite YU's early success, the Knights fought back, tying the game with three runs in the bottom of the second, and then taking the lead with three more in the third for a 9-6 scoreline. The Maccabees attempted to claw their way back with two in the top of the fourth, but the game was already out of reach. Mount Saint Mary tallied three runs in the fourth, 12 in the fifth, and four in the sixth for a grand total of 28.
Â
- Yeshiva managed one more score in the sixth inning when Arnow was brought in by a Steinmetz single, but the effort was not enough for the Maccabees to wrest control away from their conference foe. When the final out was called, the Macs had fallen, 28-9.
