(Jersey City, NJ) - Junior Jason Wininger (East Brunswick, NJ/Hun School) scored three wins at Sabre and senior Perry Fox (Elizabeth, NJ/KYHS) won twice at Epee as the Yeshiva University Men's Fencing team scored a 16-11 win over Division I/Patriot League member Lafayette College at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 10. The Lafayette win gave Yeshiva its fifth win of the 2007-08 season and marked their only win of the day, but overall Yeshiva enjoyed an outstanding overall effort.
During the all-day event, Yeshiva fell to Division I powerhouses Army (22-5), and Cornell (21-6), and also lost 23-4 and 24-3 to Division III strongholds Haverford, and Drew, respectively. But the efforts were respectable against some of the best competition they have faced this season ... and their win over Lafayette proved to be one of the highlights of their season.
Lafayette jumped ahead 6-3 after Foil competition with Maccabees Justin Shemesh (Staten Island, NY/Yeshiva Flatbush), Avi Lifschitz (Toronto, Canada/CHAT), and Michael Levine (Teaneck, NJ/Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy) scoring wins, but the strong Lafayette Foil squad proved to be too much.
YU evened things up at Epee, winning 6-3. Fox suffered a 5-4 setback during the opening round, but rallied to score 5-3 wins during the next two rounds to complete an outstanding match. Also for the Maccabees, senior Stephen Lerner (Quebec, Canada/Academie Hebraique) won twice at Epee, and sophomore Jonathan Adler (Toronto, Canada/CHAT) also win.
Yeshiva closed the match out with a 7-2 win at Sabre as Wininger continued his recent trend of outstanding play with three straight wins, two of which were by 5-4 scored. The Maccabees also enjoyed outstanding efforts by sophomore Morgan Barany (Hollywood, FL/Hillel), who also went 3-0, and sophomore Tzvi Feifel (Chicago, IL/Fasman Yeshiva) also won for the Macs.
Yeshiva returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 24 when they travel to the MACFA Championships at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. The all-day competition begins at 8:00 a.m.
