Lady Macs Fall Short on the Road Against St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

Varnai had a double-double, for two straight 10pt games

NEW YORK, NY – The women's basketball team dropped their non-conference game against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn last night, by a 80-56 final.  The Macs drop to 0-2 while St. Joes improved to 1-0.

The opening minutes of the first half went back and forth between the teams, with neither able to pull away by more than 4.  A field goal by Avigail Varnai at the 14:22 mark gave Yeshiva a 4 point edge, but St. Joe's came back to tie it a few minutes later.  The game took a turn in St. Joe's favor at the 8 minute mark, as they started to pull away and built an 11 point lead late in the half.  But a 10-3 run by the Macs in the final 3 minutes, capped by a score from Eli Goldenberg with 2 seconds showing, brought the Macs to within 4 at 38-34 heading into the locker room.

St. Joe's came out of the half and within 3 minutes pushed their lead to 10.  The Macs were unable to respond, and St. Joe's went on a 25-4 run over the first nine minutes of the half to take a 25 point lead.  Yeshiva ended the game with a three pointer as time expired from Jaclyn Ramras.

Ramras led the Maccabees with a double-double 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Avigail Varnai also recorded a double-double, with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Yeshiva shot 32% from the field in the game, and 25% from behind the arc.  Yeshiva out-rebounded their opponent 48-47.

The team will travel to NYU-Poly on Sunday for a 2PM Skyline conference game.
