YU falls to Purchase in Men's Basketball despite 20 points from Leibovich

(Purchase, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) scored 20 points, breaking 20 points for the third time this season, and the Maccabees outrebounded an opponent for the fifth time this season, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped, 79-55 by Purchase College on Tuesday night at Purchase. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Skyline Conference play.

A Yechiel Boussi (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) jumper with 15:48 to play in the first half tied the score at seven, but from there a 13-2 Purchase run put the host Panthers ahead for good. Six straight YU points made it a 20-15 game, but Purchase responded by scoring the final eight points of the first half to take a 40-27 lead into halftime.

The second half saw much of the same as Yeshiva for no closer than the 13-point halftime deficit as Purchase extended the lead to as many as 30 points before a late Maccabee rally allowed for the 24-point loss.

Leibovich was outstanding, converting seven of his 14 field goal attempts, while hitting all five of his free throws. He also had five rebounds and two assists. However, nobody else in the Yeshiva line-up had more than six points during the game.

Yeshiva outrebounded Purchase College, 31-29, but were outshot 55%-43% and 20 YU turnovers led to 30 Purchase College points off turnovers.

The Maccabees return home on Thursday, Dec. 4 when YU hosts SUNY Old Westbury for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
