Men's Basketball unable to overcome slow start, falls to Old Westbury for second straight loss

(New York, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) scored 15 points to break double-digits in scoring for the sixth time this season, and YU outscored their opponents 32-31 during the second half of play, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team lost its second straight game, 75-57 to visiting SUNY Old Westbury on Thursday night at the Max Stern Athletic Center. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Skyline Conference play.

Facing SUNY Old Westbury for the first time since defeating the Panthers 88-82 in an overtime thriller during last season's Skyline Conference Quarterfinals, Yeshiva quickly fell behind 8-2 and were never able to catch up to the visiting Panthers. After a Yechiel Boussi (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) three-pointer with 11:15 to play in the first half made it an 18-13 game, Old Westbury went on a 13-2 run to extend the lead to double digits, and never looked back. The Panthers led 44-25 at halftime as Yeshiva shot only 38% from the floor during the opening stanza.

YU did show tremendous improvement during the second half, shooting 46% to outscore Old Westbury 32-31, but the effort was too-little, too late as Yeshiva dropped its second straight game.

Leibovich was terrific for Yeshiva once again, converting five of his 10 field goal attempts and grabbing four rebounds. Also for Yeshiva, junior Alex Claster (Overland Park, Kansas/Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy) finished with eight points and four rebounds, while senior Benjamin Lockspeiser (Highland Park, NJ/MAYHS) added nine points and three assists.

Yeshiva returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 7 when the Maccabees travel to St. Joseph's (LI) for a 2:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
