Brookim, Leibovich lead Yeshiva past Polytechnic in Men's Basketball

(Brooklyn, NY) – Sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) notched career highs in both points scored (29) and rebounds (14) and junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aries, Argentina/ORT II) added 27 points as the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team scored an exciting 96-78 win over Polytechnic Institute of NYU on Sunday afternoon at Polytechnic. With the win, Yeshiva is now 6-7 overall and 4-5 in Skyline Conference play.

The first half was a back and forth affair that saw Polytechnic lead by as many as seven points, 22-15 with 10:29 remaining in the stanza. However, an 11-3 Yeshiva run culminated with a Benjamin Lockspeiser (Highland Park, NJ/MAYHS) three-pointer with 6:24 to play to give Yeshiva a 28-25 lead. Two ties and three lead changes later, Polytechnic led 38-37 at halftime.

The second half would prove to be a different story as Yeshiva played perhaps its finest half of the season. A 12-1 Yeshiva run culminated with a Yechiel Boussi (Fairlawn, NJ./Frisch) jumper with 12:46 remaining in the game to make it 58-47 in favor of YU. Yeshiva's lead remained in the teens for much of the second half, but a Polytechnic three-pointer made an eight-point game with 2:25 left in the game. But Yeshiva closed things out by scoring 14 of the game's final 20 points for a crucial Skyline Conference win.

The Maccabees shot a season-high 67% from the floor, including a spectacular 80% (20 for 25) during the second half of play, allowing for their highest scoring output in a game since a 101-98 double overtime win over CCNY on Dec. 20, 2006. Yeshiva also outrebounded Polytechnic 26-24.

Boussi and Lockspeiser were also outstanding as Boussi scored a career-high 12 points on 6 for 7 shooting and added four assists and three rebounds, while Lockspeiser scored 13 points and added three assists and two steals.

Yeshiva returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 27 when they host Purchase College for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
