Maccabees battle Skyline powerhouse Golden Eagles but lose second straight Men's Basketball game

(New York, NY) – Sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) record his third consecutive double-double - scoring 23 points and adding 10 rebounds, and a total of three Maccabees scored in double-figures, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team fell 67-58 to Skyline Conference powerhouse St, Joseph's (LI), 67-58 on Saturday night at the Max Stern Athletics Center. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 6-10 overall and 4-8 in Skyline Conference play.

The first half was a battle with six ties and four lead changes, but the latter portion of the half set the tone for the rest of the game.  Brookim lay-up with 4:45 to play gave the Maccabees a 22-21 lead, however, from there, St. Joseph's scored nine of the final 13 points of the half to give the Golden Eagles a 30-26 halftime edge.

Yeshiva battled back during the early part of the second half, taking a 43-42 lead with 8:52 to play after a Brookim lay-up, but St. Joseph's responded with seven consecutive points to take a 50-43 lead with 6:57 remaining in the game. Yeshiva scored four straight points to make it closer after baskets by Brookim and Benjamin Lockspeiser (Highland Park, NJ/MAYHS). But Yeshiva was unable to complete the comeback as an 8-2 St. Joseph's run made it 58-49 with 1:40 remaining in the game, all but putting things away for the visiting Golden Eagles.

Brookim was outstanding once again, converting 11 of his 20 field goal attempts, and adding three blocked shots and two steals. Also for Yeshiva, junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) scored 18 points and added five assists, and junior Yechiel Boussi (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) enjoyed another solid game with 11 points on 5 for 7 shooting.

Overall, Yeshiva shot 51% compared to 41% for St. Joseph's, and outrebounded the Golden Eagles 29-28, but 17 YU turnovers proved to be the difference.

The Maccabees return to action on Monday, Feb. 2 when they travel to Lehman College for an 8:00 p.m. non-conference game.
