Maccabees allow nine straight goals during 10-1 loss to Old Westbury

(Yonkers, NY) – Sophomore Zachary Stern (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Torah Academy) scored the first goal of his Yeshiva career, and junior Daniel Rosenthal (Panama City, Panama/IAE) made 23 saves, but the Yeshiva University Men's Soccer team lost 10-1 to defending Skyline Conference Champion Old Westbury on Wednesday night at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, New York. With the loss, YU is now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Skyline Conference play.

Old Westbury scored right off the bat as the Panthers reached the scoreboard at 2:44 on a through ball. But the undeterred Maccabees struck right back as a Joseph Itkis (Newton, MA/Maimonides) corner kick landed right on Stern's head, and the rookie buried his first career goal at 10:11 to tie the score at one. Shortly after YU tied the game, a second Yeshiva goal appeared to find the back of the net, but a controversial offsides call negated the goal, and appeared to change the tide of the game.

From there, Old Westbury rolled, scoring at 10:11, 13:33, 18:55, and 22:23 to blow the game wide open and make it 5-1. The Panthers scored two more times during the first half, and led 6-1 at halftime. Four Old Westbury goals during the second half gave the visiting Panthers the 10-1 final.

Old Westbury outshot Yeshiva, 52-14 and had 11 corner kicks to Yeshiva's two.

Yeshiva was led by Rosenthal, who made 23 saves, breaking 20 saves for the second time in three games this season. Itkis and Stern combined for nine of Yeshiva's 14 shots.

The Maccabees return to action on Friday, Sept. 12 when the host Medgar Evers for a 10:00 a.m. start.
