Women's Basketball falls to Bard College in Skyline Conference Sunday matinee

(New York, NY) - Sophomore Avigail Varnai (Skokie, IL/ICJA) scored a career-high 13 points, and three Maccabees scored in double figures, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team lost 57-46 to Bard College on Sunday afternoon at Baruch College. With the loss, YU is now 1-2 overall and 0-2 in Skyline Conference play.

A Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) jumper with 13:18 to play in the first half made it an 8-7 Bard lead, but from there, the visiting Raptors went on a 13-1 run to build a double-digit lead. Bard led by as many as 17 points during the first half, and held a 36-21 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Bard dominate early as the Raptors led by as many as 18 points, but down the stretch Yeshiva fought back and pulled to within 10. However, the Maccabees would get no closer as they trailed by as few as 10, but got no closer.

Varnai was terrific, scoring 13 points and adding four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Also for YU, graduate student Elana Kastzl (Miami, FL/WYHS) and junior Libby Lapson (Chicago, IL/ICJA) scored 11 points apiece, and sophomore Daniella Barber (Seattle, WA/Northwest Yeshiva) chipped in a career-high 10 rebounds.

Overall, Yeshiva was outshot 31%-25% and outrebounded 56-39, but the Maccabees continued to play good defense, forcing 25 turnovers while committing only 22.

Yeshiva returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 when they travel to Purchase College for a 6:00 p.m. start. The game will be the first half of a doubleheader with the YU Men's Basketball team.
