(Brooklyn, NY) - Sophomore Renee Ashkenazi (Deal, NJ/Hillel Yeshiva) netted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Shir Fuchs (Herzeliya, Israel/Hayovel) scored a team-high 17 points, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team lost 69-40 to top-seeded Saint Elizabeth on Saturday night in the Semifinal Round of the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Basketball Championships at the Pratt Institute. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 3-18 overall.
After falling behind 10-0 to start the game, Yeshiva hung tough with a CSE team that went undefeated to the HVWAC Regular Season Championship - winning each game by an average of 40 points - as Fuchs scored seven consecutive points to make it a 10-7 game. A lay-up by Fuchs with 8:50 remaining in the first half made it 14-11, but from there, an 11-2 CSE run extended the Eagle lead to double-digits. Saint Elizabeth ultimately led 34-20 at halftime, a terrific effort considering that Yeshiva dressed only seven players for the game. Fuchs scored 15 of her 17 points during the first half of play.
The second half saw much of the same as YU battled with Saint Elizabeth, but a 14-2 CSE run and a later 10-0 run put the game away for good for the Eagles.
Overall, Yeshiva shot 25% from the floor, while CSE shot 43% and the Eagles held a 42-37 rebounding edge. Yeshiva also had 33 turnovers, compared to 19 for Saint Elizabeth.
Yeshiva returns to action on Monday night when the Maccabees travel to Farmingdale State for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
