Bard defeats Yeshiva in Women's Basketball season finale

(Annandale-on-Hudson, NY) - Sophomore Renee Ashkenazi (Deal, NJ/Hillel Yeshiva) had a monster game with career-highs in points (22) and rebounds (15), and fellow sophomore Avigail Varnai (Skokie, IL/ICJA) notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go with six assists, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team closed the 2008-09 season with a 69-54 loss to Bard College on Sunday afternoon at Bard. With the loss, YU finishes the season 3-22 overall and 0-18 in Skyline Conference play.

The first half proved to be a battle as the teams went back and forth, and when Ashkenazi hit a lay-up with 6:06 remaining in the first half, the Maccabees trailed 27-25. However, from there, Bard went on an 11-2 run, and led by 11, but late baskets by Ashkenazi and Varnai cut the deficit to 38-31 at halftime.

Bard broke the game open to start the second half, scoring nine of the first 10 points to open the half to extend the lead to 16 points. From there, YU was unable to cut the deficit to single digits and lost their fourth straight game.

Overall, the difference for the game was shooting as Bard shot 39% from the floor, compared to Yeshiva's 26%. Yeshiva had a 51-49 rebounding edge, and Yeshiva committed 20 turnovers, while Bard committed 19.
