Women's Tennis downs Mount Saint Vincent to improve to 2-0

(Edgewater, NJ) -Senior Gabrielle Hess (New York, NY/Ramaz) improved to 4-0 during the 2008 season in singles and doubles play, and the YU doubles teams swept their matches for the second straight day as the Yeshiva University Women's Tennis team defeated Mount Saint Vincent, 6-3 on Monday night at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, New Jersey. With the win, Yeshiva is now 2-0 overall and 2-0 in Skyline Conference play, surpassing their 2008 Skyline Conference wins total.

A year after winning only two matches during a loss to Mount Saint Vincent a year ago, Yeshiva quickly showed tremendous improvement over last year's team, sweeping doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The first doubles team of Stephanie Kimmel (Allentown, PA/Yeshiva Flatbush) and Miriam Borenstein (West Hempstead, NY/YUHS) scored an 8-1 win. At #2 doubles, Hess and Danielle Weitzman (Woodmere, NY/SKA) were outstanding during an 8-4 win, and Leah Michels (Milwaukee, WI/Torah Academy of Milwaukee) and Esther Shectman (San Diego, CA/Torah San Diego) scored an 8-4 win at #3 doubles.

The doubles wins proved to be huge for YU as the two teams split singles play. Kimmel was forced to retire from her match due to an injury, but a 6-2, 6-3 win by Hess at #2 singles and a 6-2 6-2 win by Borenstein at #3 singles locked up the win for Yeshiva. Michels added a 6-1, 6-1 win at #5 singles to the Maccabee effort.

Yeshiva returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 4:00 p.m. match.
