Men’s and Women’s Soccer Drop Skyline Conference Opener to Bard

NEW YORK, NY – Both the Men's and Women's soccer teams were in action against Skyline competitor Bard College on Sunday, the first Skyline game of the season.  The women fell in the afternoon's opener 8-0, while the men dropped the nightcap 1-3.  The women stand at 0-2 overall, while the men are now 1-2.

The women had a tough time against Bard, managing only 2 shots which were both saved.  The Raptors controlled the ball for most of the game, taking 23 shots on backup goalkeeper Anna Sce (Teaneck, NJ/Ma'aynot Yeshiva).  Anna saved 15 shots in 90 minutes of action for the Maccabees, often diving to stop shots that looked destined for the back of the net.  Meira Lerner (Sharon, MA/Maimonides) and Erica Hasten (Chicago, IL/Ida Crown Jewish Academy) each recorded a shot on goal for Yeshiva.

In the men's game, Bard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute, despite back and forth play for the opening 25 minutes.  Not giving up, the Maccabees cut the lead in half with a goal from Joseph Itkis (Newton, MA/Maimonides) in the 77th minute, but would get no closer.  Bard added another before the final whistle for the 3-1 victory.

Itkis' goal came off a deflection from the goalkeeper on a previous shot, where he lifted it over the jumping hands of the goalie.  Mark Rocklin (Rochester, NY/Halb) saved a season high 10 shots in all 90 minutes.  Yeshiva continued to force their opponents offsides at a high rate, as Bard was whistled offsides 11 times.

Both teams will continue conference play on Tuesday, with the men hosting Purchase at 8PM and the women traveling to Purchase for a 7PM game.
