Yeshiva Fights Back and Forces Overtime with 89th Minute Goal but Game Ends in a 3-3 Stalemate

Mark Rocklin made 9 saves and a big one in second OT
NEW YORK, NY – The men's soccer team traveled to Purchase College Thursday night and nearly came away with a victory in the second overtime but a penalty kick for Yeshiva was stopped and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Yeshiva scored the game-tieing goal with 55 second showing in regulation. Yeshiva's record moved to 0-3-1 (0-1-1) on the season.

The Maccabees opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Daniel Benchimol took a pass from Zachary Stern off a rebound from a previous shot. The goal was Benchimol's second of the season and Stern's first assist. Less than 5 minutes later, Purchase tied the score at 1 but Yeshiva's Yaniv Lautman got past the back line of Purchase to give the Macs a 2-1 advantage. Unfortunately, the lead was short lived and Purchase knotted the game at 2 going into the half.

Neither team was able to score for close to 40 minutes in the second half, until Purchase got the lead with less than 7 minutes showing on the clock. Down 3-2, Yeshiva continued to put the pressure on, and with only 55 seconds showing on the clock, Elezir Nuvakhov scored his team-leading third goal of the season on a header placed perfectly from Yaniv Lautman. The teams settled in for overtime, the first for Yeshiva this season.

Neither team scored in the first overtime, although Yeshiva recorded the only 2 shots on goal. In the second overtime, each team made one save before Daniel Benchimol was awarded a penalty kick in the 106th minute. Looking for his second goal of the game, Benchimol's shot was right on target but Purchase's goalkeeper made the biggest save of the game to keep his teams' chances alive. There were no more shots on goal for either team, and the game ended deadlocked at 3.

Mark Rocklin played all 110 minutes in goal for Yeshiva, making 9 saves including 1 in the second overtime. Each team recorded 12 shots on goal.

The Maccabees will host Sage College on Sunday at 3PM in another Skyline Conference competition. The game is being played at Silver Lake Park, in West Harrison, NY. Directions can be found by visiting YUmacs.com.
