NEW YORK, NY – The women's basketball team was on the road for the season's first game against Purchase College, and were defeated 83-53 by the Panthers.
Shir Fuchs led all scorers with 26 points, playing all but one minute and shooting 9-13 from the free-throw line.
Naomi Gofine had 12 points, as Yeshiva's only other double digit scorer.
Avigail Varnai had a team high 3 steals and 3 assists.
The Maccabees found themselves down by as many as 19 in the first half, and trailed by 18 with 6:18 to play. However, the Lady Macs fought back and went on a 13-0 run, sparked by 10 points from
Shir Fuchs and a three pointer from
Lauren Kempin. The teams traded baskets in the final minutes, and Yeshiva went into the half down only 7.
A second half change of defense by the Panthers proved too much for Yeshiva to handle, and Purchase pulled away right from the start of the second half. Yeshiva was 0-9 in the half from 3-point range, and ended up shooting 30% from the field in the second.
The Macs will play their first home game of the season on Wednesday, against Skyline opponent Farmingdale State. The game will be at 8PM in the Baruch College gym.
