NEW YORK, NY – The men's basketball team hosted their second straight contest at the MSAC, and were unable to get a victory against CCNY Thursday night. Yeshiva trailed most of the game, taking short lived leads of no more than 2 points. The Maccabees record fell to 0-2 while CCNY improved to 2-0 on the season.
Dovie Hoffman once again led the Maccabees scoring with 19 points on 9-14 shooting from the field. He was a single rebound short of a second straight double-double, pulling down a team high 9 boards.
Chen Biron had 11 points on 4-7 shooting and 2-4 from behind the arc.
Omer Haim led all players with an impressive 12 assists. Haim also had 4 steals for Yeshiva.
David Schmelzer and
Jeremy Pressman each recorded 8 points.
The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes, and Yeshiva held a 6-5 lead after a layup by Mazyar Kashan with 14:27 remaining in the half. That would be their final lead of the half, as CCNY went on a 14-4 run to open an 11 point lead with under 10 minutes to play. Not giving up, Yeshiva went on a run of their own, an 11-0 run that tied the game 21 with five minutes to play. Eight of those 11 points were in the paint. CCNY would take a 32-29 lead into the break after being unable to get a shot off in the final seconds of the half.
The Macs opened the second half with 4 straight points to grab the lead, but were unable to push it any further. The Beavers opened up a 16 point lead with less than 10 minutes to play and would hold on the rest of the way. Yeshiva made the game interesting down the stretch, cutting the lead down to 3 with 29 seconds on the clock after Haim hit a 3 pointer. However, 4 unanswered points in the paint and a free throw would seal the game for the Beavers, 72-64.
Yeshiva will travel to Ramapo to play in the Roadrunner Tip-Off on Saturday night at 8PM. Salve Regina and SUNY Maritime will play in the first game, with the winner advancing to play the winner of Yeshiva and Ramapo. The consolation game will be at 1PM and the championship game at 3PM on Sunday.
