Men’s Basketball Continues Hot Play with 64-60 Win over St. Joseph’s

NEW YORK, NY – The men's basketball team snapped a 7-game losing streak against St Joseph's that dates back to December of 2005, with their 64-60 win Thursday night. The Macs held a lead the entire second half, allowing St. Joseph's to tie the game only twice. The win puts Yeshiva over .500 in conference play (8-7) and 9-10 overall. St. Joseph's drops to 11-8 (10-4).

Chen Biron got the Macs rolling with the game's first basket, and the Macs built a 12-7 lead early on. An 8-0 run by the Eagles gave them a 3 point lead, and later extended it to their largest of the game, 27-21, with 6:19 to play. The field goal at 6:19 was the last scored by the visitors, as they missed their final 6 shots from the field (all 3-point attempts). The Macs closed with a 13-3 run to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room.

The second half was all Yeshiva, as they never gave back their lead and played during only two brief ties. At 47-47 with 8:57 to play, the Macs opened the game up with an 8-3 run, capped by an Alex Claster layup. The game's biggest play came with 7 seconds to play, from point guard Omer Haim. After making the second of two free-throws to give Yeshiva a 3 point edge, The Eagles had trouble inbounding the ball and Haim doubled back and made a diving attempt at a poorly thrown pass. With the ball and on the ground, St. Joe's was forced to foul again, sending Haim to the line practically sealing the win. He connected on the first one, but missed the second. That proved enough as St. Joe's was barely able to attempt a shot as time expired.

Haim nearly recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and dishing out 9 assists. Martin Leibovich led the scoring attack with 17 points before he fouled out with a minute to play. He pulled down a team high 7 boards which ended his consecutive double-double streak at 4 games. Claster finished with 11 points and stole 3 passes.

Yeshiva is in the middle of a 4-game home stretch, which will continue on Sunday at 2PM. Sage College defeated Yeshiva 67-55 in Albany early in January. The Macs will close their home stretch on Tuesday when they host Purchase at 8PM.
