Martin Leibovich Named to All-Skyline First Team; Coach Halpert Named Coach of the Year

NEW YORK, NY – The Skyline released the results from the All-Conference voting, and Martin Leibovich was a top 6 vote getter and one of the five first team All-Conference members. The other coaches in the conference also voted Coach Halpert as the Coach of the Year, after a season where the Macs defeated the Skyline Champions twice during the regular season, along with the regular season champs and runners-up (Westbury and St. Josephs).

Martin had a great season for the Maccabees, ranking sixth in the conference in scoring (15.8 ppg), fifth in rebounding (7.4 rpg), seventh in field goal percentage (.510), and fifth in 3-pt. percentage (.388). The leading scorer for the Macs scored 378 points this season in 24 games played. He was twice named the Skyline Player of the Week, and a 4-time Honor Roll player. Martin increased his career double-double total to 11, after recording 6 this season. He also recorded 40 steals and a team-high 10 blocked shots.

“Martin's selection to the All-Skyline First Team is a great honor for Martin and all the players and staff of the Yeshiva University basketball program”, commented Coach Halpert. “Martin finds himself in great company along with the other four players on the first team and should be very proud of his hard work and significant accomplishment.”

Coach Halpert guided the Maccabees to a 12-14 (11-9) mark this season and a berth into the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals; the team's 5th playoff appearance in the last 6 seasons. The Maccabees were one of only two teams to defeat the Skyline Champion Purchase Panthers twice this season, doing so the first game of the season then again in the regular season's final two weeks of play. During the season, Halpert got wins over Farmingdale and St. Joseph's, the school's first against those teams since 2004 and 2005, respectively.

“I am very grateful to receive this recognition from my fellow coaches. To be honored by your peers is always special but to be chosen from among so many great coaches and in a year of so many great coaching accomplishments makes me even more thankful.”
