Fuchs Tallies Career Best 36 but Lady Macs Fall to Purchase

NEW YORK, NY - Playing their first game in over a month, the Lady Maccabees basketball team hosted Purchase College Thursday night looking for their first Skyline conference win. Shir Fuchs scored a career high 36 points but that wasn't enough to overcome the Panthers (5-11, 5-6) who defeated Yeshiva (1-14, 0-11) 80-63.

Yeshiva's only lead came off the game's first basket, a layup by Naomi Gofine that was assisted by Avigail Varnai. Yeshiva played fairly even with Purchase over the first 16 minutes, trailing only by 7 with a little more than 4 minutes left in the half. However, a 15-2 run by the Panthers to end the first half gave them a 20 point edge going into the locker room.

Despite the large deficit, Yeshiva played hard in the second half, cutting the lead down to 12 midway through. Yeshiva connected on four straight three-pointers but that proved not enough to overcome the large deficit. Fuchs scored 7 of Yeshiva's final 9 points to cap off her strong offensive night.

Shir Fuchs was the game's high scorer with 36, and she also recorded 3 steals and 3 rebounds in 40 minutes of play. Avigail Varnai finished with a double-double 13 points and 10 assists, while also pulling down 5 rebounds and stealing the ball 3 times. Lauren Kempin had 3 of Yeshiva's 4 blocked shots in the game while also pulling down a team high 9 rebounds. Naomi Gofine ended with 6 points and 7 rebounds, while Mercedes Cohen chipped in with 4 points and 3 assists.

The Lady Macs will travel to HVWAC foe New Rochelle on Sunday for a 1PM game. The two teams met earlier in the season at the Medgar Evers Tournament and Yeshiva came out with a 66-29 win.
