Box Score

NEW YORK, NY – The men's basketball team won a close 50-49 decision against Sage College Saturday night, closing out a tough 5-20 (5-13) season for Yeshiva.  After the rest of the conference games were played, the two teams finished tied for 7th in the standings, one spot out of the conference tournament.  Sage finished with a 10-15 (5-13) record.

Dovie Hoffman led the team with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  Gil Bash and David Schmelzer added 8 points apiece and Shlomo Weissberg came off the bench with 7.  Omer Haim added to his skyline best assist per game average, dishing out 7.

Although Yeshiva scored the opening basket, the Gators led the game for the first 10 minutes, often countering Yeshiva's score with one of their own.  However, the Macs erased that lead and went on a 17-8 run to open an 11 point lead with less than 5 minutes to play in the half, and seemed to be in full control of the game.  Yeshiva held an 8 point lead at the break.

The Gators slowly chipped away at Yeshiva's lead, and eventually took a one point lead at the 8:00 mark in the second half.  Bash knotted the game seconds later, before Sage scored 5 of the next 7 points to go up by 3 points, but two free throws by Hoffman and two from Yoni Eckmann gave Yeshiva a one point edge with 2:39 remaining.  With a chance to take the lead, Sage went to the free throw line on their next possession but missed both.  A Yeshiva turnover gave Sage another chance and the Macs were whistled for a foul, sending the Gators back to the line.  This time Sage hit both, and led by 1 with 1:51 left.

After a 30-second timeout by the Macs, Yeshiva came out and ran their offense to perfection, drawing a foul and sending Dovie Hoffman to the line.  Hoffman calmly hit both free throws to give Yeshiva the edge again.  Sage missed three shots and turned the ball over once in their final possessions to give Yeshiva the 50-49 win to cap the season.
