Men's Soccer Loses High Scoring Affair to York

Box Score

YONKERS, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's soccer team came on the short end of a high-scoring soccer game on Friday afternoon, losing 5-3 to York College (NY) at Tibbetts Brook Park in a non conference affair.

It a match that saw a combined 38 shots (19 by each team), 14 offsides called (8 for York, 6 for Yeshiva) and, 11 corner kicks (9 for York, 2 for Yeshiva) and eight goals, with neither team having control of the game for long periods of time.

The first goal of the high scoring affair came just over a minute into the contest when York's Wilkerson Jean Jacques made his way through the Yeshiva defense and scored via a breakaway just seventy-nine seconds into the game.

But that was just the start of the scoring. Yeshiva tied the score midway through the thirteenth minute when Leon Aboudi blasted a free kick from the far side of the field about a foot outside the box.

The visiting Cardinals took the lead just a little past the midway point of the first half when Frank Rodriguez scored at the 28:45 mark.

While York led 2-1, it was Yeshiva who held a 9-6 advantage on shots. The Maccabees outplayed York in the first half, despite trailing, and the ball was in the York zone for much longer than it was in the Yeshiva zone.

In the second half, York's athleticism and quickness caught up to Yeshiva as the Cardinals began to take control of the game. A lapse on defense by Yeshiva allowed a point blank shot by York's Kevin Gonzalez to cross the goal line and give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead with just under twenty-five minutes left.

With just over twelve minutes to play, the Maccabees capitalized on a York mistake, and a free kick by Daniel Benchimol found the goal to get Yeshiva within a goal.

But the one goal deficit lasted just fourteen seconds as York went straight through the YU defense on the ensuing possession and scored another goal.

The Cardinals held the two goal lead into the final minute of play when another goal with less than thirty seconds remaining gave then a 5-2 lead. The Maccabees added a third goal with 1.5 seconds remaining in the contest on a strike by Benchimol, his second of the game and team leading fourth of the season.

The loss drops the Maccabees to 1-8-0 this season, while York improved to 6-8-1.

Yeshiva's goalkeeper, Doron David made five saves in net, while Shady Mohamed stopped four for York.
