RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's soccer team closed out its 2013 season on Wednesday evening with a 5-4 loss to the City College of New York (CCNY).
The Maccabees finish the year with a 5-13-0 overall record this season.
Despite the loss, the Maccabees got another phenomenal performance from their freshman sensation,
Itamar Ben David, with his third hat-trick of the season. His three goal performance, all of which were scored in the first half, upped his season total to 16.
Daniel Benchimol netted the other Maccabees' goal in the contest.
Yeshiva jumped out to a 1-0 lead just forty-three seconds into the contest on a Ben David goal. CCNY tied the score at one on a goal by Anton Mourdoukoutas at the 8:10 mark, before Yeshiva went up 3-1 with a pair of goals later in the half. Both goals were scored by Ben David, his first of two in a row was netted at 15:58, before completing the hat-trick at 33:13.
Yeshiva led 3-1 at halftime, but the Beavers earned a goal early in the second half to get their deficit to one. CCNY's Cosmin Sandru scored at 47:46 to make the score 3-2. Yeshiva though stayed in control and went up by two again after Benchimol's goal at 52:02 made the score 4-2.
CCNY netted three goals in the final thirty minutes to take the lead and win the match. First a goal by Kenan Redzematovic at 60:23 made the score 4-3. Then Lukasz Zalewski earned a goal to tie the score with 7:22 remaining in regulation. The Beavers followed with another goal moments later when Nicolas Corrao found the net at the 87:12 mark to give CCNY the lead and win.
CCNY held a slim 17-15 margin in shots. Yeshiva was led in shots by Ben David with five, while Benchimol had four.
Amiati Samuels recorded two for the Maccabees.
Joseph Blechner made three saves in goal for Yeshiva.
