PAXTON, Mass.— The Yeshiva women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 season with a 98-78 loss to Anna Maria College in the opening round of the Anna Maria tip-off tournament on Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Maccabees (0-1) will face Bay Path College in the third place game on Sunday at 12 noon. Bay Path College was defeated by Pine Manor College, 92-70, in the tournament's other game.
In Saturday evening's season opener, the Maccabees were led by
Rebecca Yoshor, who picked up where she left off last season with an outstanding game of 34 points and 25 rebounds. She shot 11-for-15 from the floor and 12-for-15 from the free throw line.
Yeshiva also got a solid game out of
Julia Owen with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Stephanie Greenberg added 15 points and six steals.
Anna Maria College led the game from start to finish. The Amcats opened the contest on an 11-0 run to take a double digit lead just over four minutes into the game. Anna Maria led by double figures the rest of the first half and went into halftime ahead 50-35.
Yeshiva hung tough in the second half and trimmed its deficit to single digits with twelve minutes to play as the Maccabees trailed 62-53. But the Amcats held the Maccabees at bay over the final ten minutes of the contest to win the game.
Anna Maria held a 60-20 advantage on points in the paint and 34-6 on points off turnovers. The Maccabees held a 51-47 advantage in rebounding.
