JAMAICA, N.Y.— In a game that saw the biggest lead by either team five points, with eight overall lead changes and 14 ties, it was the Maccabees who earned the win in the end as the Yeshiva women's basketball team beat York College 68-67 in a thriller on Wednesday evening.
The Maccabees were led by
Julia Owen with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Stephanie Greenberg added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while
Rebecca Yoshor had eight points and 11 rebounds.
York was led by Kiera Burns with 23 points and nine rebounds.
The Maccabees took the lead for good, breaking a 64-64 tie, on a lay-up Greenberg with fifty seven seconds left. Moments later Yeshiva went up by four when Greenberg connected on a pair of free throws with forty seconds remaining.
But the game proved to be far from over. First York connected on a three point shot to pull itself back to within a point with thirty one seconds left. Then the Maccabees committed a turnover on the ensuing possession, giving the host Cardinals the ball with the shot clock turned off. But an offensive foul by York with seven seconds left gave the ball back to the Maccabees. But Yeshiva gave it right back to York two seconds later, allowing the Cardinals a chance at a buzzer beater which came up short.
Both teams connected on twenty eight field goals. Yeshiva put up 83 attempts for a 33.7 percent clip, while York attempted 76 shots for a 36.8 percentage.
The Maccabees held a 57-56 edge on rebounding, including 22-20 on the offensive end. Yeshiva held a 17-12 advantage on second chance points. York outscored the Maccabees 20-11 on points off turnovers.
Yeshiva is back in action on Sunday for a contest at the College at Mount Saint Vincent at 1 p.m.
