NEW YORK, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's basketball team was defeated at home in a Skyline Conference game as the Maccabees lost to Sage College, 63-44, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Saturday evening.
With the loss, Yeshiva is now 6-10 overall and 4-6 in Skyline play, while Sage improves to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in Skyline. The win by Sage completes a season sweep of the Maccabees, and Sage will hold any tie-breaker in playoff seeding.
Yeshiva was led by
Benjy Ritholtz with 11 points and eight rebounds, while
Yisrael Feld added nine points, four rebounds and three assists.
Yosef Rosenthal scored nine points, while
Yoni Eckmann had four points, four blocked shots and three assists.
Sage was led by Kai Deans with 22 points on 11-for-15 shooting with eight rebounds, while Brett Ullman had 11 points and three assists off the bench.
The visiting Gators never trailed in the contest. The game's only tie was 2-2 in the opening minute, before Sage led the rest of the way. The Maccabees stayed within striking range early in the game. After the Gators used an 8-0 run to lead 10-2, Yeshiva used a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to two.
But Sage managed to maintain the lead the rest of the way. The Maccbaees cut the deficit to one on three separate occasions, but never grabbed the lead. Yeshiva trailed 22-21 with six and a half minutes to play, before the Gators closed out the first half with a 12-3 run to lead 34-24 at halftime.
In the second half, Yeshiva cut the deficit to five with a 5-0 run to open the stanza. But Sage countered with an 8-0 run to go ahead 42-29 with 14:15 to play.
The Maccabees cut the deficit to nine with 12:10 to play, but Yeshiva never got closer as Sage gradually increased its lead the rest of the way.
Sage held a 44-14 advantage on points in the paint and a 39-29 edge in rebounds.
Yeshiva returns to action on Tuesday for a home contest against the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 8 p.m.
